What is this data?

The imaps web application now contains Raleigh Police Department (RPD) crime data for Part 1 crimes within the past thirty (30) days.  The information shown on the web site is public information.  It is information contained on incident reports released from the RPD's Police Records Division.  The symbols on the map represent approximate locations of the incidents reported to the RPD.  This data only contains incidents reported to the Raleigh Police Department, no other municipal jurisdictions or enforcement agencies are included.

Can I find out more information?

When the map is zoomed into a scale of 1"=825' or less, the crime incidents display general crime code descriptions.

If you would like to see additional information about the incident, click the identify tool ("i" button) located on the top-left of the page.  Now click on one of the crime incidents in the map window.  The results of your identify will appear in the top-right corner of the browser.  The additional information available:

Coming Soon...

In addition to the imaps application, the RPD will offer a Crime Mapping application that contains fifteen (15) months of Part 1 crime data.  The Crime Mapping application allows users to search by Police District, crime types, date and time range.  The Crime Mapping application displays a map, allows a buffer search and exports report data to excel.

What is an LCR code?

The crime categories in this application are comprised of numerous Local Crime Reporting (LCR) codes as defined by the Raleigh Police Department.

The following is a listing of the individual LCR codes that fall into the various application crime category groupings.

How is the data mapped?

RPD Crime Analysts use the GIS system to geo-locate reported incidents along the street centerline GIS database by site address.  The GIS data contains all the streets in Wake County along with an address block range for each street segment.  When the Crime Analysts geo-locate incidents, the GIS system interpolates the address and mathematically determines where it would fall along a street block range.  The crime incidents geo-locate to approximate locations along a street segment and may not fall exactly on or near the property of the reported incident.
